Edward Tsui
About Edward Tsui
Biography:
Edward, born in Hong Kong, is a Toronto based photographer. He worked as an architect for more than twenty years in England, Hong Kong and Canada. During this time, he has immersed with his cameras on architecture and the built environment. With the accumulation of photographic works and thoughts, a calling arose within him to share his images with audiences.
His architectural training and prior education in art has shaped Edward’s sense of vision and focus. Being self-taught in photography, it has further developed his approach and, in turn, his style.
Through the lens, his subjects are less of postcard materials in that they might not be photogenic or decorative in the pictorial sense. Quite often his works are different in composition; and the images may be esoteric at first glance. To him, these images provide narratives with least sentimentality; and for audience, open up thoughts without setting boundaries.
Hence there is a consistency within him to refrain from camera tricks and digital touch-ups. All his shots are presented as natural as they have been captured. It is his belief that a photographic print should best convey the image he sees it rather than fabricating through his mind. It is the vision of immediacy he believes his audiences appreciate the most. For some images, he offers the audiences black and white prints as he feels they might have more potency and definition.
Over the years, he has built a consistent portfolio, some of which are kept by private collectors including painters, architects and other art lovers.
