Chosen to design of the loggia structure after the partial collapse of the building at the end of 15th century, a young Andrea Palladio began to shine in the field of architecture in Vicenza and the Veneto region.  The composition of his new façade was complex with interplays of columns and entablatures.  It merged seamlessly with the existing Gothic structure through a series of vaulted brick ceiling along the loggias on two floors.  The building, now filled with shops, restaurants and museum, retains many hand-painted old shop signs and paving that attribute to its charm.  The term ‘basilica’ was used by Palladio himself after the ancient Romans for civil edifices.
